Cognos Analytics 11.0.11

The best things come in small packages. A well shared idiom, perhaps, but if you bear in mind that it was just seven weeks ago, to the day, that IBM released CA R10, then you might not expect a lot from Cognos Analytics R11. Yet, while Cognos Analytics 11.0.11 might be a small release in terms of new functions and features, it does address some pretty big asks.

As in the recent brace of releases we’ve see from IBM, Cognos Analytics R11 focusses on some of the most-requested enhancements from users, adding to the features of CA in one hand, while easing the upgrade path from Cognos BI in the other hand.

Cognos Analytics Roadmap IBM Cognos Analytics 11.0.11

And, with IBM formally ending its support for Cognos BI 10.2 earlier this week, this latest release (which introduces the ability to display your existing portal pages created in BI in Cognos Analytics, amongst its improved functionality) is timely.

With this in mind, Nick Waters, one of our senior business analytics consultants, has picked out the highlights of the new release.

Custom polygons in R11

Mapbox integration with Cognos Analaytics in the past has been brilliant, but limited in terms of mapping. Now, within R11, you can customise your own geospatial regions in Mapbox and use this within dashboards and reports.

Here’s a detailed post by IBM on how you can start visualising your custom geospatial polygons in Cognos Analytics R11

C10 Portal Page support

A collective cheer is heard… The introduction of Portal Pages in Cognos Analytics has been a much requested feature from our Cognos BI 10 customers. And as a popular RFE amongst the wider Cognos community too, it’s now been addressed. With it comes the ability to display your existing portal pages created in BI within the Cognos Analytics experience. Another reason, perhaps, to make the upgrade to Cognos Analytics – if you haven’t already…

Data Caching mode in dashboards

Here’s a brand new feature for Cognos Analytics R11 that will ensure your dashboards perform at their very best.

R11 introduces data caching at a dashboard level, giving you control of caching against data sources.

It allows you to turn caching on or off. And, if you’re using Framework Manager, an automatic setting will support caching properties within data modules, picking up the corresponding settings from the data source. Also, there’s no need to worry about users seeing data they shouldn’t – results that are cached from one user’s dashboard can be reused for a different user’s dashboard only when both users have the same security profile.

The cached data is retained in Cognos Analytics’ memory for as long as the original connection to the underlying data server remains open. Find out more about the new data caching functionality.

Small, but perfectly formed – just like this post… these are the highlights of Cognos Analytics R11. For a complete rundown of the new release, you can see the full notes over on the IBM blog.
