On the 30th of April, IBM ended its support for Cognos BI 10.2.x. What does that mean for you?

Well, if you are still on Cognos BI 10.2.x, End of Service (EoS) means that no new development work on the software will take place as IBM shifts its full focus to Cognos Analytics. This also means no new fix packs, discontinuing support for third party components and no IBM support for code-related problems.

It’s not time to panic, though. Help is at hand…

Over the past 2 years, we’ve been working closely with customers to help them explore Cognos Analytics and make the move from Cognos BI to the latest Analytics release. So we can share our experiences, step you through what’s easy to migrate and what needs further consideration, and set your mind at ease.

If you haven’t already, now is the time to re-explore the latest Cognos Analytics environment, remind yourself of the changes and improvements that have been introduced, and investigate what it would take for you to make the upgrade.

For those who need more time to plan the move to Cognos Analytics, we (as an IBM support providing partner) will continue to support our customers. Furthermore, IBM has also announced a new Continuing Support option. But the emphasis is now very much on looking forward.

Our expert Cognos consultancy and support teams are ready to discuss your options further, to help you explore the new Cognos Analytics product, and decide with you the migration that best suits your needs and requirements.

Contact us on support@barrachd.com – or speak to your account manager – to arrange a hassle-free consultation.

But before you decide what’s best for you, there are some important things to consider…

Are you ready to upgrade to Cognos Analytics?

Since its release, we’ve been busy keeping you up-to-date with the very latest in Cognos Analytics. We’ve dissected every major new release through a series of webinars, User Groups, technical demos and blog posts, sharing an overview of the new Cognos Analytics features and functionality as soon as they become available. We’ve hosted IBM experts and shared advice too, all to ensure you have the knowledge you need to plan your upgrade.

Cognos Analytics - end of service Cognos BI 10.2.x

Cognos Analytics 11.0.0 was unveiled at the very end of 2015. A lot more than just a new name for IBM’s flagship BI solution, it offered all the power of Cognos BI with added usability. In short, a radically overhauled UX and design that maintains the powerful managed data analytics capabilities that existing BI users had become accustomed to.

As well as a host of exciting new features and functionality that have been introduced by Cognos Analytics, IBM has also committed to ‘protecting the investment’ customers have in Cognos BI 10, with the aim of making the transition to Cognos Analytics as smooth as possible.

Barrachd runs Cognos Analytics training courses too, to help you brush up on the latest releases. Our courses can be held at a location that best-suits you, we’ll even supply pre-configured lap-tops.

Cognos BI 10.2.x Continuing Support

Also easing the transition, a new Continuing Support option has been introduced by IBM. It’s available when you maintain active S&S and is now an option to clients running Cognos BI 10.2.x.

Continuing Support assistance provides you with access to pre-existing and available fixes. However, it’s important to note that new interim fixes will NOT be created as part of this offering. In short, it provides extra flexibility for you to remain up and running on your current 10.2.x software version until you’re able to upgrade to the latest version.

Included in Continuing Support is:

  • 7 days, 24-hour support for mission critical emergencies (Severity 1)
  • Provided in English, with the local language accommodated when possible.
  • Remote problem analysis and assistance during normal country business hours in your time zone.
  • Support for routine, short duration installation and usage questions.
  • Response time objective of two hours during prime shift for voice and electronic problem submissions.
  • Response objective for critical/emergency problems during off-shift hours is two hours.
  • Unlimited number of technical support incidents.
  • Access to documentation, technotes and other online product material.
  • Access to existing available fixes created before the product’s EOS date to correct known defects.

The Continuing Support offering does not include:

  • Voice and electronic access support for code-related problems.
  • Development analysis of new defects.
  • Development of or packaging fixes that are not already available.
  • Support for Supporting Programs and third party components.
  • Infrastructure that is not included in the software version’s Hardware and Software Requirement page.

(IBM may withdraw or discontinue Continuing Support for the Programs by providing at least twelve months prior notice.)

So, what’s next for you?

There’s a lot to consider. But the main message is to start to plan your migration to Cognos Analytics as soon as possible. And we can certainly help to guide you through it.

Continuing Support is a useful option, but do be aware that should any issues be found in Cognos BI 10.2.x, IBM will most likely not issue fixes and instead advise the customer to upgrade to Cognos Analytics. Again, as a support providing partner, we can help our customers with workarounds should they be available.

So, avoid panic, but don’t leave it until April. Arrange a discussion with us at your earliest convenience to understand your migration and upgrade options. Plan your upgrade in time to do it on the terms that suit your business best. Arrange a time to meet our team and we’ll make sure you have all the information you need to make the most informed decisions.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
