Smart glasses to avoid the queue at the bar

cocktails and data

In the perpetual quest to use data to better understand their customers, Pernod Ricard has a new tactic: adding data-tracking capabilities to drinks glasses. These branded glasses – being trialled in Paris – are equipped with sensors that connect to an app, allowing customers to place orders by scanning it with a smartphone… If the glass is taken home the app will even use the smartphone’s location to serve them cocktail recipes instead! The pay off for opting in to share your data? The chance to avoid long queues at the bar is one good incentive!

Machine learning to save sharks

Machine learning to save sharks

“Using satellite data and machine learning, a nonprofit called Global Fishing Watch maps fishing boats around the world to help crack down on illegal fishing. And now the map’s coverage of the Atlantic Ocean has a new layer – the routes taken by 45 sharks wearing tags.” With an estimated 100 million sharks killed each year from fishing activities (sharks, in turn only kill around six humans a year), the system hopes to address this worrying trend.

How to make your AI project more likely to succeed

How to make your ai project more likely to succeed

“A recent survey of ‘aggressive adopters” of cognitive technologies found that 76% believe they will “substantially transform” their companies within the next three years. Travellers could be given Black Mirror style ratings in the future

Black mirror style ratings

“Travellers could be ranked based on their reputation when they go on holiday in the future, according to the Open Data Institute. The ODI has predicted that individuals could be given a ‘Reputation Barometer’ score, which will affect the services and benefits they can receive. Reminiscent of a Black Mirror storyline, the research sets out what travel could look like in the near future thanks to data portability.”

Britain needs to improve data skills to survive post-Brexit

data skills shortage

“As a nation, Britain currently lacks the data skills to realise the full potential of data analytics in a post-Brexit economy, according new research. Data analytics is set to contribute £241bn to the UK economy between 2015 and 2020 – equivalent to an average of 2.0% of GDP a year. But a series of new studies have highlighted that the UK faces a major gap in skills for the data economy.”
